After failing to make a dent in the Canon/Nikon duopoly in DSLRs, Sony took a stab using mirrorless with so-called NEX APS-C cameras in 2010. It then expanded that effort into full frame in 2013. Sony eventually discontinued all the DSLRs and transitioned fully to mirrorless, labeling them all "Alpha" cameras.
