Thom's Mini Review: Quite a decent lens, overall. It's small when collapsed, has a decent zoom lens and a reasonably high build quality for a kit lens. Optically, it's up to what the Nikon 1 sensors can record, with very few visible issues. It has visible barrel distortion at 10mm, almost no visible distortion at 30mm. Sharpness is good, even across the field. The zoom ring is a nice soft texture, but has no raised ribs. You can find the ring quickly due to the texture change, but it can be slightly slipperly if wet (from mist, etc.). The lack of a lens hood is a curious ommission: it needs one. Curiously, the 10-30mm has more parts in it than the Nikon J1 camera. You get the lens with the camera in the color you selected for the camera. This is a bit misleading, as really only the inner barrel next to the camera and the lens cap are the camera color; there's still plenty of gray (zoom ring), silver (barrel around zoom ring), and black (button to expand lens and inner lens barrel). Silver and black variants look the most "traditional." Recommended

Thom's Mini Review: Another pleasant surprise. The lens isn't that much larger collapsed than the 10-30mm kit lens (less than an inch longer). Optically, it's easily up to what the Nikon 1 sensors can record, with very few visible issues. It has visible barrel distortion at 30mm, almost no visible distortion at 110mm. Sharpness is again good, even across the field. VR seems to work well, about as good as VR I on the big Nikon DSLR lenses. The zoom ring is a nice soft texture, but has no raised ribs. You can find the ring quickly due to the texture change, but it can be slightly slipperly if wet (from mist, etc.). The included lens hood bayonets quickly onto the front of the lens, and is better made than the lens hoods for the DX kit lenses. For its price, it provides a high quality telephoto reach in a reasonably small package. Highly Recommended

Thom's Mini Review: This is still preliminary, but I find this lens a bit awkward in practice. It's big and bulky on the small Nikon 1 bodies and seems to have been designed primarily for videographers that like to zoom (no zoom ring, only a power zoom rocker). Optically, it doesn't match the 30-110mm in the overlapping range. I'd personally rather carry the two-lens 10-30mm/30-110mm combination and change lenses than use the 10-100mm.

Thom's Mini Review: A bit of a disappointment. Yes, it's small, and it does make for a very pocketable camera. It also seems slightly wider than the 10-30mm kit lens, and it is a half-stop faster. But optically it doesn't seem to match the very good 10-30mm kit lens. Visible barrel distortion is present. Needs a lens hood; the best option for that would be to get a 40.5-to-52mm step up ring and any one of a number of screw in 52mm hoods, including Nikon's own low cost HN-3.
