Olympus announced their first m4/3 camera in June of 2009, christening the line of cameras "Pen" in homage to their well-liked half-frame 35mm SLR cameras of the same name. The Olympus lineup of m4/3 cameras now goes from entry level (E-PM3, or Mini) to enthusiast (E-PL5), to serious enthusiast (E-M5).
Pen = rangefinder style cameras
OM-D = DSLR style cameras

Note: The main reason to buy this over the E-P1 was if you wanted to use an EVF with the camera. Otherwise, in terms of image quality and performance, the E-P1 and E-P2 are essentially identical.
Olympus E-P3
The E-P3 was a full update to the high-end Pen model, with a slight body redesign, new button placements, an integrated flash, the additional of a higher resolution touchsensitive OLED LCD, new movie modes, and a faster autofocus system. Note: In terms of "best" Olympus m4/3 camera, the E-P3 has now been surpassed by the OM-D E-M5. Unfortunately, the E-P# series needs another serious upgrade, as it's fast becoming long in the tooth.
Olympus E-P5
The E-P5 is the fourth generation of the original Olympus m4/3 camera. Basically take an E-P3 body and add the newer OM-D DNA in the sensor and operational ergonomics and you have the E-P5. The E-P5 also adds a couple of new bits: faster autofocus and focus peaking. Note that the E-P5 is not weather sealed like the OM-D E-M5.

- Price: US$650 body only, 700 with kit lens
- Announced: September 17, 2012
Note: Olympus appears to be moving towards the E-PL series replacing the original E-P cameras. The E-PL5 gets the optional grip from the E-P3, for example, and is gaining the touch screen, as well. Overall, the E-PL5 represents Olympus 2012 mid-range for their m4/3 cameras, allowing options like the external EVF to accessorize it higher over time, while still keeping it in the "small, slightly de-featured" category to distinguish it from the top end. The addition of the 16mp sensor brings the E-PL lineup to current standards, and is highly welcome. This is a competent, small camera, with a lot of customization available to the serious user.
